Gaji Minimum di Malaysia: Kadar Semasa dan Maksudnya
Gaji minimum semasa di Malaysia, siapa yang terpakai, perubahannya selama ini, dan kaitannya dengan gaji bersih.
What is the minimum wage now?
Malaysia sets a national minimum wage through the Minimum Wages Order. As of 2025 the rate was raised to RM1,700 per month, applying first to employers with five or more employees and extended to smaller employers shortly after. This is the legal floor for basic monthly wages — your employer cannot pay you less for normal working hours. Always confirm the current figure, as it is reviewed periodically.
Who does it cover?
The minimum wage applies to most private-sector employees regardless of nationality, with limited exceptions such as domestic servants and certain apprenticeships. It covers basic wages and does not include allowances, overtime, or bonuses. If you are paid daily or hourly, the order also specifies equivalent daily and hourly minimums based on your number of working days.
Minimum wage vs take-home pay
Remember that the minimum wage is a gross figure. After the 11% EPF deduction and small SOCSO and EIS contributions, your take-home pay will be a little lower — though at this income level you generally pay no income tax. The trade-off is that EPF deductions at the minimum wage are still building your retirement savings, even on a modest salary.
A short history
Malaysia introduced its first national minimum wage in 2013 at RM900 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM800 in East Malaysia. It has been revised several times since — to RM1,000, then RM1,100, then RM1,200 in major cities, then a unified RM1,500 in 2022, and RM1,700 in 2025. The steady upward trend reflects rising living costs and policy aimed at lifting low-income workers.
What if you are paid below it?
Paying below the minimum wage is an offence. If you believe you are underpaid, you can raise it with the Department of Labour (Jabatan Tenaga Kerja) under the Ministry of Human Resources, which handles complaints and enforcement. Keep your payslips and employment contract as evidence of what you were actually paid.
Daily and hourly minimum rates
The RM1,700 monthly minimum also has daily and hourly equivalents for workers who are not paid monthly. Under the Minimum Wages Order the daily rate depends on how many days you normally work each week: about RM78.46 a day for a five-day week and RM65.38 for a six-day week. The hourly minimum is about RM8.17. Part-time workers paid by the hour must receive at least the hourly rate for every hour worked. Piece-rate and commission workers must still end up with at least the minimum for their normal hours — if commissions fall short, the employer must top up.
What RM1,700 means in your pocket
On RM1,700 a month, a Malaysian employee under 60 contributes RM187 to EPF (11%), about RM8.50 to SOCSO and RM3.40 to EIS. There is no income tax at this level. Take-home pay is about RM1,501. The employer also pays RM221 into the worker's EPF plus SOCSO and EIS, so the job costs the employer roughly RM1,954 a month. The 2025 increase, step by step
The rise from RM1,500 to RM1,700 was announced in Budget 2025 and introduced in two phases. From 1 February 2025 it applied to employers with five or more workers and to employers in professional occupations listed under MASCO, regardless of size. From 1 August 2025 it became compulsory for every employer. Domestic workers remain excluded from the order. Employers who pay less can be fined up to RM10,000 per employee, so if your salary was not adjusted, you are entitled to the arrears.
Minimum wage vs living wage
The minimum wage is a legal floor, not a measure of what it costs to live. Bank Negara Malaysia has published living-wage estimates for Kuala Lumpur that are well above RM1,700 for a single adult, and higher still for couples and families. In practice, many entry-level jobs in the Klang Valley, Penang and Johor Bahru pay above the minimum because of competition for workers. Use our salary data to see what entry-level roles in your field actually pay before accepting the minimum.
